Good design with our core Pocket House principles.
Every design decision is crucial for creating a home that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, efficient, and comfortable. Small house design requires careful consideration and a keen awareness of the occupants' needs, maximising the potential and prioritising the well-being.
Sustainable
From the get-go, our systemised approach to design and construction significantly minimises construction and materials use and waste. Pocket House designs are cheaper to run as they use correct orientation, passive solar design, effective cross ventilation and good shading. A highly insulated building envelope, able to be tightly sealed, means our efficient heating and cooling options are barely required. It is possible to manage all energy usage by using a modest solar and battery system.
Thoughtful
Pocket House has been thoughtfully designed to sit comfortably within different environments. The cleverly designed spaces are functional and flexible, and wasted ‘circulation only’ space is minimal. The simple form and small cladding palette mean it will complement, not compete with its surroundings. Its smaller scale and openness allows residents more garden space for socialising or connecting with nature.
Quality
Our Pocket House construction system is well beyond what is required by the National Construction Code. Oversized timber framed walls allow for high levels of insulation, UPVC double glazed doors and windows with carefully supervised builds ensure a highly insulated building envelope that can be sealed up during extreme weather conditions. We use quality fixtures and fittings that have been specified to last and be low maintenance. Polished concrete flooring, internal brick feature walls and stunning custom joinery are all standard.
Systemised
The systemised design and construction of Pocket House allows us to deliver consistent quality, sustainable and cost-effective homes. We have perfected this approach over the last 12 years with Goodhouse, while also nurturing strong relationships with our builders, trades and suppliers. This ultimately results in higher quality construction, selections and finishes. We are open and transparent in our communication, and you can trust that all stages of the design and construction process will run efficiently.
Accessible
Accessibility is important in Pocket House. We wanted to make it accessible to as wide an audience as possible by making it affordable and competitive in the ‘off-the-plan’ market. We also focus on accessibility in the design and function of the house, future proofing for ageing in place. Features like wide doorways, low slip flooring in all wet areas, easily modifiable kitchen design, reconfigurable bathroom areas and low threshold access doors.
Functional
Our Pocket House designs are highly functional and adaptable to changing lifestyles and living situations. Each design maximises shared living spaces and splits up the bathroom spaces to allow them to be used by multiple people at once. There is plenty of storage space in each bedroom, the hallway and laundry, plus pantry cupboards in the kitchen and some built in shed storage. The wet areas (laundry, bathroom and toilet) are grouped together and can be easily closed off from the living area of the home. While the internal spaces are designed to be flexible in layout and use.
Reliable
If you choose to build a Pocket House with us, you can trust that we will carefully lead you through the process from beginning to end. We are committed to the best outcome for you, your site and our planet. We promise clear communication knowing that your peace of mind through this potentially stressful process is so important. We are transparent and open about all costs and will provide relevant breakdowns and updates throughout the process.
Pocket House and creating a sustainable home for your family.
Growing a better future for your family
With Pocket House we design small homes for excellent living. It also allows us to preserve space for nature, even in limited areas. We all know this provides better well being while also creating important opportunities for productivity. Growing vegetables in and around the home is a rewarding and sustainable way to provide fresh, nutritious produce for yourself and your family.
Why passive design makes a world of difference.
The concept focuses on achieving energy efficiency through a combination of super-insulated building envelopes that can be locked tight in extreme weather events, high-performance windows that are correctly shaded in the right seasons, and natural ventilation. The goal is to create buildings that require minimal energy for heating and cooling, resulting in significant energy savings and reduced environmental impact.
With Pocket House this same sustainable approach to building design extends beyond immediate cost considerations. It addresses the broader goals of energy efficiency, occupant well-being, environmental responsibility, and long-term resilience, making a substantial and positive impact on both individual buildings and our shared world.
Thermal mass through winter and summer.
The use of thermal mass in homes has a long history, dating back to ancient times. Various cultures around the world have incorporated thermal mass principles in their building designs to regulate indoor temperatures and improve comfort.
Optimising thermal mass in your home is a smart design choice that assists in achieving comfort year-round. In winter, it absorbs and retains heat, providing warmth, while in summer, it releases stored coolth, helping maintain a comfortable and energy-efficient indoor environment throughout the seasons.
Maximising sunlight in your living space.
Light shapes our lives. In the living space of a home it not only enhances the visual appeal but also creates a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. Ample natural light contributes to a sense of spaciousness, improves mood, and fosters a connection with the outdoors, making your home a bright and uplifting sanctuary.
